Promoting sustainable tourism: Banaue Lodge Competition
Designing small housing in the terraces of Banaue
The Banaue Lodge Competition was created with the aim of promoting slow and sustainable tourism that respects the environment and enhances local traditions.
The competition invites entries to design lodging facilities in harmony with the unique setting of the Banaue terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, combining elements of Philippine tradition with technical and architectural innovations.
A design inspired by Filipino tradition
Orbyta Engineering’s proposal is developed following the principles of Philippine architectural and agricultural tradition, reinterpreted with a modern twist. The structures echo the configuration of rice paddy terraces, organizing spaces on different levels that match the natural topography of the land.
Accommodations are inspired by traditional “bahay kubo,” typical Filipino huts, but have been revamped to include contemporary design elements, ensuring comfort and functionality for guests.

Shared spaces and comfortable rooms
The facilities consist of rooms designed to accommodate up to three people in 20 square meters. Common areas, located on different levels of the terraces, encourage interaction among travelers, creating an atmosphere of conviviality and sharing.
Bathrooms are located in easily accessible areas, connected to the rooms by stairs in harmony with the environment. Common areas include rooftop terraces, ideal for relaxing moments or admiring the breathtaking views offered by the surrounding terraces.
The proposal to reduce environmental impact
The project proposal is distinguished by the integration of innovative technical solutions that improve guest comfort and reduce environmental impact:
- Double structural shell: a natural ventilation system ensures a constant flow of air, keeping the interior cool even on the hottest and most humid days.
- Multifunctional cover: the outer cover of the huts protects from the weather and acts as a heat shield, contributing to indoor climatic comfort.
- Sustainable materials: the use of acacia wood and bamboo, both of which are durable and strong, ensures the stability of the structures and optimal breathability, while respecting the principles of sustainability

A slow and sustainable tourism experience
Every detail of the project proposal is designed to offer a unique experience that combines adventure, culture and respect for the environment. The facilities are not just a place to stay, but a meeting point for travelers who share a passion for discovery and appreciation of local traditions.
The design for the Banaue Lodge Competition represents a perfect synthesis of innovation, respect for the environment and enhancement of local culture. Through the use of natural materials, advanced technical solutions and a design that respects the morphology of the land, these lodges offer a new standard for sustainable tourism.
